📉 Facts About Summer Reading Loss

  1. Students can lose up to 2–3 months of reading skills over the summer if they don’t engage in regular reading activities.

    (Source: National Summer Learning Association)

  2. Low-income students are hit hardest. By the end of 6th grade, they may be nearly 3 years behind their peers due to cumulative summer learning loss.

  3. Reading just 4–6 books over the summer can help prevent reading regression, especially when children choose books that interest them.

(Source: Scholastic & University of Tennessee research)

  4. Without continued reading, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency all tend to decline — especially in students still developing foundational skills (K–3).

  5. The summer slide widens achievement gaps, particularly in literacy, and has long-term impacts on academic confidence and performance.

📚 The Good News

  • Daily reading for 20 minutes can maintain or even improve reading levels.

  • Tutoring, library programs, and structured reading activities during summer are powerful tools to keep kids engaged and learning.
